I have read about homeschool programs having a mission statement all over the internet. I decided we would have one for ours. I did a little reading here are some of the take away points I found. A mission statement is a statement of purpose. Every business/organization out there has one. It ensures that everyone is on the same page working towards the same goals. Similarly our homeschool programs benefit from having a such a statement. There is no length requirement. It can be as short or long as you would like. I wouldn’t worry about making it sound super cool or artsy it simply needs to be what you want it to be.
Mission Statements
- Give your program purpose
- Place the mission statement somewhere visible (communicate it to your children)
- Helps you make decisions and know how to spend resources
- Frames Strategy, you don’t need to copy what others are doing do what is best for your children
- Enables you to evaluate and change in order to improve
4 Questions to help you form a mission statement:
- Why am I choosing to homeschool?
- What are 3 long/short term goals for your homeschool?
- What do you hope your children will learn in the long term?
- What valuable things will I be providing for my children through homeschooling?
Sample mission statements:
To provide a well-rounded education through creative thinking, innovative activities and interest based-learning.
Here is one I really like from the Montessori Schools:
To encourage the development of the whole child by providing a comprehensive Montessori education, cultivating independent thought and foundational skills as well as awareness of their environment; empathy for others; social ease and confidence.
To establish within a child the intellectual, emotional, and physical rigor needed to become a self-directed learner, flexible thinker, creative problem solver, and support their ever-increasing curiosity about the world in which they live.
To help our students to grow up to be successful global citizens.
